From the muddy festival fields of Flanders to the Caribbean coastline of Negril , people travel for the feeling of live music: the anticipation, the crowd, the rhythm, the atmosphere and the memory of being somewhere extraordinary.
I have followed that feeling through many places.
My first concert was Arno Hintjens in De Panne, Belgium.
I remember Juan Luis Guerra in Tenerife, performing Burbujas de amor on a summer night in Adeje, where the bubbles went straight to the head. I remember being at the early MTV music events in Negril in the Samsara hotel for the MTV show , surrounded by the energy of the Caribbean cliffs. And Cuba, where sometimes life itself feels like a concert.
I remember southern Spain, South America and Cabo Verde.
I was there. Everywhere.
Each artist and each destination left a different colour.
I loved, danced and cried.
My experience of electronic music did not go much further than the acid years at Versuz and La Cage in Hasselt. But I danced like crazy. I surrendered to the rhythm, to the lights and to the energy of the people around me.
I may not have known the scene deeply, but I knew the feeling.
Because when music reaches the soul, your aura open.
When Music Becomes a Destination
I have never experienced music as something separate from travel.
A concert can bring back a person, a landscape, a season or an entire period of your life.
Sometimes it is a major festival with thousands of people. Sometimes it is a local concert, an evening with friends or an unexpected performance that stays with you for years.
I was not collecting concert names.
I was collecting places, atmospheres and moments.
Each concert became part of my travel history. Each destination gave the music a different colour.
That is why MOGA Essaouira interests me.
Essaouira Already Has a Rhythm
Essaouira does not need a festival to create atmosphere.
The Atlantic wind, the medina, the port, the restaurants, the Gnawa heritage and the people already give the city its own rhythm.
You could spend the afternoon by the ocean, walk through the medina, eat by the port and then find yourself listening to music somewhere in the city.
The concert was not separate from Essaouira.
It belonged to it.
That is what makes MOGA interesting.
MOGA Essaouira 2026, MOGA's Tenth Anniversary
MOGA returns to Essaouira from 30 September to 4 October 2026 for its tenth-anniversary edition.
The festival began in Essaouira in 2016 and has grown into one of Morocco's leading electronic-music events. The current anniversary programme includes international names such as Jamie Jones, The Martinez Brothers and ANOTR, alongside Sonja Moonear, Bradley Zero, Richy Ahmed, Silvie Loto and a broad Moroccan and international lineup.
MOGA is divided into two connected experiences.
MOGA OFF, on 30 September and 1 October, brings free events to different venues across Essaouira and the medina.
MOGA IN, from 2 to 4 October, is the ticketed main festival programme at Hôtel Le Golf d'Essaouira & Spa.
The distinction matters.
MOGA OFF allows visitors to experience the city before entering the main festival. The medina, restaurants, port and local atmosphere remain part of the experience.
MOGA IN then provides the large-scale festival environment.
It is a combination that works particularly well in Essaouira because the destination already has a strong identity of its own.

Travel Intelligence: Choosing Your Arrival
Getting to Essaouira is straightforward once you look at the entire journey rather than the flight in isolation.
Travellers can arrive through Essaouira, Marrakech, Casablanca or Agadir, depending on their international connections and wider Morocco itinerary.
Essaouira-Mogador Airport is the most direct option, around 15 kilometres from the city, but has fewer international connections than Morocco's larger airports.
For many international visitors, Marrakech will be the most practical gateway, especially when MOGA forms part of a wider Moroccan journey.
Casablanca makes sense for many long-haul arrivals, while Agadir can work particularly well for travellers combining Essaouira with the southern Atlantic coast.
Intercity coach services such as CTM and Supratours connect Essaouira with major Moroccan cities, subject to current schedules.
Private transfers offer greater comfort, particularly for late arrivals, luggage or accommodation outside the medina.
The Insider Advice
Compare the whole journey, not only the flight price.
A cheaper flight can become the more expensive choice once transfer time, waiting, luggage and additional transport are included.
For a festival weekend, convenience has a value.
Essaouira in Early Autumn
September and early October are among the more attractive periods for an Essaouira stay.
While inland Morocco can remain hot, the Atlantic keeps the city considerably more temperate.
Days are generally warm, while evenings can become distinctly fresh.
And the wind is part of the equation.
The Wind Is Not a Detail
Essaouira is famous for its wind, and visitors should plan accordingly.
The beach can feel considerably cooler than the medina. The ramparts catch the Atlantic breeze, and evenings can require a light jacket or sweater even after a warm afternoon.
For MOGA visitors, this has practical consequences.
Comfortable shoes matter. Layers work better than heavy clothing. Festival outfits should be chosen for walking as well as dancing.
The wind is not something to escape.
It is part of what makes Essaouira Essaouira.
Where to Stay: Medina or Outside?
There is no universally correct answer.
The right base depends on how you want to experience MOGA.
The Medina
Riads and boutique guesthouses inside or close to the medina are the natural choice for travellers who want to be immersed in the city.
You are close to:
MOGA OFF.
Restaurants and cafés.
The port.
Souks and galleries.
Evening life.
The reward is atmosphere.The compromise is access.
Vehicles cannot enter many medina streets, so luggage may have to travel the final distance on foot. Confirm the arrival arrangements with your accommodation before travelling.
Outside the Medina
Larger hotels and resort-style properties around the beach and beyond the historic centre offer a different experience.
They are often preferable for travellers looking for:
Larger rooms.
Pools and spas.
Sea views.
Easier vehicle access.
More privacy.
A quieter base after late festival nights.
The compromise is distance from the medina and the need for taxis or organised transport.
For MOGA, the right hotel is therefore not necessarily the most luxurious one.
It is the one that fits the way you intend to experience the festival.

Sleep quality, transport, access and service all become part of the decision.

What to Book First
For the tenth-anniversary edition, I would prioritise:
Accommodation.
Festival passes.
Flights and onward transport.
Airport or intercity transfers.
Restaurants for busy evenings.
Any private tours, surf sessions or special experiences.
If you have a particular riad or hotel category in mind, book the accommodation before the festival creates a last-minute squeeze on availability.
What to Pack
Keep it practical.
Light clothing for the daytime, comfortable shoes for the medina, a sweater or lightweight jacket for the evening, sun protection and a reusable water bottle.
For the festival, add a power bank, a secure small bag and ear protection if you are sensitive to loud music.
You are not packing for a festival field.
You are packing for an Atlantic Moroccan city where you may walk, eat outdoors, dance late and return through the medina after midnight.

30 September — Arrival
Settle into your accommodation and take the evening slowly.
Walk through the medina, discover the port, have dinner and, if timing allows, explore the opening MOGA OFF programme.
1 October — MOGA OFF
Keep the daytime flexible.
Beach, port, galleries, food and the medina all deserve time before the evening programme begins.
MOGA OFF is the moment to experience the festival as part of the city.
2 October — MOGA IN Begins
Have a slow morning before heading to the main festival programme at Hôtel Le Golf d'Essaouira & Spa.
Jamie Jones is among the announced artists for Friday's programme.
3 October — Festival Night
Do not underestimate the value of rest.
Eat properly, return to your accommodation if necessary and prepare for another long night.
The Martinez Brothers are among the announced artists for Saturday.
4 October — The Final Chapter
ANOTR is among the announced artists for Sunday's closing programme.
If your travel plans allow it, leave enough time to enjoy the final day rather than treating it simply as departure day.
Music and the Moroccan Setting
There is something particularly interesting about placing contemporary electronic music in Essaouira.
The city already has a powerful musical heritage through Gnawa culture and the Gnaoua and World Music Festival.
But Essaouira's identity is broader than any single musical tradition.
It has long attracted musicians, artists and travellers because culture here feels lived rather than staged.
MOGA introduces another generation and another sound into that environment.
It does not replace the city's musical identity.
It adds to it.
Looking beyond the obvious.
A destination is not simply a hotel, a monument or a beautiful view. It is the combination of things that determine how a journey actually feels: the route you take, where you sleep, how you move, what the weather does, what happens after the official programme ends and what remains in your memory.
That is why I keep returning to music.
From my first concert with Arno Hintjens in De Panne to Juan Luis Guerra in Tenerife, Montego Bay, Cuba, southern Spain, South America and Cabo Verde, music has accompanied different chapters of my life.
I was there.
And every destination gave the music a different colour.
Now Essaouira adds another chapter.
MOGA's tenth anniversary gives travellers a reason to come.But Essaouira gives them a reason to stay.
Come for the artists.
Stay for the Atlantic, the medina, the food, the wind and everything that happens between the concerts.
Because when the festival is over, the memory will not belong to the music alone.
It will belong to Essaouira.
